WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (WTAQ) - Some of the nation’s top conservatives will speak this weekend at a meeting in Wisconsin Dells. The Americans for Prosperity are holding the 2-day event that’s opening Friday at the Chula Vista Resort. Conservatives who held Tea Party rallies in the last year are getting together to talk about strategy, and see how they can have a say in this fall’s elections. They’re calling it the “Defending the American Dream Summit.”
Former President Ronald Reagan’s son Michael is scheduled to speak along with Grover Norquist, the head of the Americans for Tax Reform. Some Wisconsin conservative heavyweights are also on the agenda – including House Republican Jim Sensenbrenner, state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, and State Supreme Court justice and former GOP Assembly Speaker David Prosser.
Organizers say they’re not interested in forming a third party that would take votes away from Republicans or Democrats. Tim Dake of Milwaukee’s Grand-Sons of Liberty says there are 68 Wisconsin groups loosely connected with the Tea Party movement – and they all operate independently from one another. Recently, dozens of conservatives have formed the Wisconsin Patriot Group. Their platform includes the ending of government bailouts for business, audits of the Federal Reserve, and punishing employers who hire illegal immigrants.
